The dos and don’ts for long hair

We’ve scoured the web for the best tips and tricks for dream manes: it’s not necessarily faster to grow hair, but it’s guaranteed to be more successful.

How fast hair really grows

Dhe bad news first: If you want to let your hair grow, you need patience. The way to the long look is just as long. Hair grows just 10 to 15 centimeters a year. Unfortunately, there are no miracle cures for faster growth.

Extensions: bridging aids when letting hair grow

If you don’t want to wait, you can help: Extensions are simple instant solutions for long hair. There are now real hair techniques that neither look unnatural nor strain the hair. However, there is a catch: for a good hair extension , you have to reckon with at least 500 francs.

Transitional hairstyles: the cut decides

If you want to let your hair grow, you should choose a transitional hairstyle with ideal conditions. The most variable hairstyle when letting hair grow is a soft layered cut. The layered look is particularly good for those who want to part with their bangs. Precise cuts (e.g. a classic bob) quickly lose their basic shape during the growth phase and make the head of hair look unkempt. There are also voices warning against step cuts as hair of the same length grows stronger and healthier. That’s nonsense, because every hair grows on its own. But it is true that the hair should be cut gently. You really shouldn’t try thinning cutting techniques with a knife or fringe scissors right now.

Regular sharp cutting: It hurts, but it’s a must

Even if you don’t want to hear it, if you want to let your hair grow, you have to cut it regularly. The tips need a mini-cut every eight to ten weeks. If you don’t react to even the slightest hint of hair-splitting, the split ends will move upwards and you risk having to give up a lot more length at a later hairdresser appointment. However, it doesn’t hurt if you keep an eye on it in the hairdressing salon to ensure that only millimeters or the affected areas are cut off. And you can see them best when your hair is dry.

Does trimming hair grow faster?

Many also swear by regular trimming because it is supposed to make the hair grow faster. Unfortunately, this is too good to be true. Your hair will therefore not grow faster, but more beautifully.

Well tied, better grown

It doesn’t matter whether the hair has already grown to record length or is still on the way there, if you want to grow a healthy dream mop of hair, you shouldn’t always wear it open. The tips rub against clothing, making them rough and brittle. It also regularly happens that individual hairs get knotted and break at the knot points. Save yourself hair-stripping styles and tie your hair into a ponytail as often as possible.

Velvet gloves, please!

Long princess hair is sensitive. If you treat them too roughly, they will break or split. It is therefore best to comb your hair only with natural bristles and if possible only when it is dry, because wet hair breaks off most easily. To tame wet hair, very coarse-toothed combs are recommended. Sharp-edged metal or plastic combs and teasing should also be taboo. A cuddle course is also required when choosing hair ties and hair clips. Hair bands that are too thin act like a knife and cut into the sensitive strands. Soft, thick hair ties and hair bands are better. Hair clips should be as wide as possible or made of plastic.

Care for more power in the hair

Hair care products are not magic, but good tools. Because they can’t grow the hair faster, but it can make it healthier. Many treatments and shampoos work with hair building blocks, such as keratin. Keratin penetrates deep into the hair shaft, crosslinks the fibers there like a supportive corset and thus helps the hair to become stronger and more resistant.

Which shampoo is the best?

To find the right care products, you need to determine your hair type. Dry and unruly hair needs a shampoo that moisturizes and smoothes, while oily hair needs a shampoo that is less moisturizing. If you are unsure about your hair type, ask your hairdresser.

A treatment a day keeps the scissor away…

Of course, our hair does not need a rich care treatment every day, but you should now pamper your hair with a hair mask about once a week. There are different product forms that satisfy different hair needs. By the way, hair treatments can also be made yourself. (Also read: DIY beauty: make masks for face and hair yourself )

Creamy hair treatments (e.g. Aesop Rose Hair & Scalp Moisture Masque, John Frieda Frizz-Ease Wunderkur, Wella System Professional Repair Mask) are a must for almost every hair type that wants to grow shiny. They give the hair back the moisture, elasticity and shine lost through styling and environmental influences. However, even these fragrant miracle cures cannot repair damaged hair, no matter what the jar says.

The recently popular hair oils are especially recommended for dry and brittle hair or colored hair (e.g. Kahina Giving Beauty – Argan Oil, AVEDA Dry Remedy Oil, KIEHL’S Deeply Restorative Smoothing Hair Oil Concentrate). If you have fine and rather greasy hair, you should really only use light oils and if your hair is damaged by coloring (e.g. Bumble Bumble Invisible Oil).

By the way, protein treatments for hair (e.g. Redken extreme cat) are said to be a lifesaver for overstressed hair due to extreme styling and frequent coloring .

Haircolor? That sounds good!

Unfortunately, it is true that the magic bullet against dull and gray hair is the enemy of healthy hair. If you don’t want to do without fresh paint, you should follow three rules. 1.Have your hair dyed by a professional if petty cash allows. 2. Tone your hair instead of subjecting it to permanent coloration. 3. Treat your hair regularly to a rich and deeply effective care treatment that counteracts the drying out caused by coloring.

The best professional tips for growing hair

Washing instructions for long hair

But even the best care products are useless if you don’t know how to wash your hair . Most shampoos are concentrates that need to be used sparingly. You foam it up with water in your hand and only shampoo the roots with it, the foam that is created is sufficient to clean the lengths as well. By the way: It is not without reason that the word shampoo derives from the Indian word «champo», which means «to massage». Massages stimulate the blood flow to the hair roots and thus also the growth process of the hair. With the subsequent conditioner, however, the hair set is exactly the opposite. Avoid the hairline and massage the conditioner into the lengths and ends in particular.

No Poo? Grow hair without washing

One hears again and again from Hollywood and its beauties that washing hair is bad for the hair anyway. Supporters of the “No Poo”-Trends swear by the hair’s own natural fat. After three to four weeks, it should give hair a new shine and make it stronger than ever. However, this is a difficult path and is immediately destroyed with the first shampoo wash. In principle, washing your hair frequently is not harmful at all, as long as you don’t over-treat your hair and don’t overstrain it by constantly styling it with heat (hair dryer, straightening iron, curling iron). So wash as needed. Anyone who tends to have greasy hair or feels unwell should be allowed to wash their hair every day without fearing a loss of shine. If you wash your hair daily and have very fine and rather greasy hair, use mild care products (preferably without silicone).

A hairy thing: heat and styling

Styling is the friend of every initial hairstyle, but the enemy of healthy hair growth. Whether from the tap, hair dryer or straightening iron, the associated heat strains the hair, dries it out and makes it brittle.

  • You should therefore wash your hair preferably at hand-warm temperature, for a little freshness kick and extra shine, it can also be rinsed with real cold water.
  • If you don’t want to do without a hair dryer, straightening iron and curling iron, you should use heat protection spray before styling.
  • There are now high-quality styling devices that dry and shape the hair more gently, such as hair dryers with ion technology or ceramic-coated straightening irons.
  • When drying, you should blow-dry from top to bottom in the direction of hair growth to smooth the outer cuticle of the hair.
  • We recommend working quickly with straighteners and curling irons. The ends of the hair in particular should only be exposed to the heat for a short time. When curling, it is therefore advisable to start curling the hair from the roots.

Beauty food: dietary supplement for faster hair growth

For a long time, biotin and silica were considered miracle cures for rapid hair and nail growth. Many former followers are now advising against regular use or self-medication. Because once the body gets used to a high intake of biotin or silica, it needs them. Therefore, seek advice from a doctor if necessary.

And whether food supplements can help in the long term has not yet been proven. It is therefore better to avoid the risks and side effects, but also the costs that arise from unexplored growth promises, because one thing is certain, if you eat a healthy and balanced diet, you certainly don’t have to worry about normal hair growth.

Sun protection for the hair

Sun-kissed hair may look like a holiday, but it’s actually just stress for your hair. UV rays not only attack the color pigments of the hair, but above all their substance. Rough, brittle and dull strands are also the result of too much sun. If you want to let your hair grow , protect it from the dangerous radiation. Hats and towels work just as reliably as UV protection products. The same applies to heat, by the way.

Otherwise, unfortunately, only one thing helps to grow a magnificent mane: wait and drink tea. Best of all, black tea. Like caffeine, it is said to stimulate metabolic activities and thus hair growth. I wish you success.

Caution, silicones!?

Shampoos containing silicone now have a bad reputation. They are not biodegradable, can trigger allergies and weigh the hair down and make it sticky, so that care products can no longer get into the hair. About every second shampoo and about 90 percent of all conditioners contain silicones. For good reason. Because silicones enclose the hair like a film, make it softer and make it appear shinier.

However, this is only visible on the hair surface. Hair experts nevertheless warn against generally demonizing silicones, because there are definitely useful silicones for certain hair types. High-quality silicones are recommended for dull, curly or very stressed hair, for example. If you have fine and greasy hair, you are better off using a silicone-free shampoo.

Silicones become particularly problematic for healthy hair growth when they are not water-soluble, i.e. can no longer be washed out. The so-called «build-up effect» arises because non-water-soluble silicones build up one layer of silicon after another. Therefore, you should make sure that you only use hair care products with water-soluble silicones.

But how is the layman supposed to recognize that? The endings of the ingredients are a good guide. The endings -cone and -xane indicate silicones. Natural cosmetics with the BDIH logo are basically silicone-free.

If you want to save yourself the trouble, you can use silicone-free products (e.g. Weleda Rosemary Shampoo, Kérastase Cristalliste Shampoo, Swiss O Par Milk and Honey Shampoo, L’Occitane Repair Shampoo). A silicone break with cleansing shampoos can also help.

In the list below we have listed the most well-known and different silicones in a table:

Non-water soluble silicones: Dimethicone, Cetearyl Methicone, Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Stearyl Dimethicone, Trimethylsilylamodimethicone, Cetyl Dimethicone

Water- soluble silicones: Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Lauryl Methicone Copolyol, Dimethicone Copolyo, Polysiloxane, Dimethicone copolyol/HWP, Hydroxypropyl
