This time we stayed in a great hotel, as I mentioned – next to the Pantheon. Not very big, but we weren’t looking for one. The feeling was amazing. In the evening, if you open the shutters, you hear a pleasant noise from the Pantheon Square, from curious tourists walking, from the nearby restaurants. 

The four stars were deserved everywhere, despite our expectations and the experience of tourists, from which we learned how diverse the meaning can be invested in the concept of “hotel category” in the most visited cities in Europe, and not only there. It’s good when you come across exceptions.

After a lot of travel, I think that compromises should not be made with hotels – where you are staying is one of the most important issues, immediately after deciding where to travel. It affects the overall perception of both the destination and the time spent there. In this case, there was no more ideal location, comfort and atmosphere for a stay in Rome. Most of sights are within walking distance. In the evening you just walk out of the entrance and find yourself in one of the characteristic streets with many restaurants.

When it comes to restaurants, the central area of ​​Rome offers an endless choice, which makes it better to use the old tried and tested method – a recommendation from local people. By the way, here in Rome for the first time we came across a restaurant that is closed on weekends! Apparently its owners have long since reached a point of complete financial indifference :), naturally maintained without much effort by the good location of one of the most visited Roman squares plus the crowded influx of tourists at any time. It seemed absurd to us, but it was a fact. However, the truth is that the restaurant has long earned a name, if we have to look for economic logic. In addition, restaurants, like most hotels in Italy, are mostly a family business, and ultimately everyone has the right to relax on the weekends?Naturally, however, such working hours seem strange to the tourism industry, from which point of view you look at it. But the fact that things were not the same for all restaurateurs was evident from a number of completely empty restaurants, which once again shows that it is not just a question of location.

The first night we came across “La Sacrestia” – near the Pantheon and to our liking. Not that at least ninety percent of the trattorias didn’t look that way, but we liked the food and the cramped but cozy hall with crowded tables, pleasantly noisy, and unobtrusive music (Italian, of course).

The other night we were in the notorious “Alfredo” – with walls full of photos of all sorts of celebrities – from Elizabeth Taylor, John F. Kennedy and Sophia Loren, to Alice Cooper :), who eat the famous fettuccine Alfredo, which we remembered with one of the red wines in the leaves.

When it comes to food, I do not dare to miss a trattoria in Trastevere – “Sabatini”. It is located in the square opposite the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere – one of the oldest in Rome. There are probably many better restaurants in the area, but we remembered the one with delicious food, intimate atmosphere, and the warm attitude of the waiter – about 70 years old gentleman, cheerful and loving his work – a view that would be a unique landmark . In general, Trastevere turned out to be a very pleasant stop and if we can judge only tonight – not as crowded with tourists as other places in Rome.

Since Dutch cuisine is generally not famous for any special traditions, or at least not like other European cuisines, the cuisine is a fusion. The chefs emphasize all sorts of innovations in food preparation, fresh and organic products, and the restaurants themselves often reach eccentricity. Many restaurants in Amsterdam are known for their unconventional locations – a former Renault showroom, a former greenhouse, an old ferry, and the leader in non-standard is the Freud restaurant (Spaarndammerstraat 424), where food is prepared and served by former psychiatric patients.

Without exhausting the list, the Cathedral of Seville, the Iglesia del Salvador, Saint Nicholas, Santa Maria la Blanca are a must-see for those interested in religious sites. I remember every church we entered, with its atmosphere and radiance. Is it because we were lucky to walk there on Saturday night I do not know, but all but one were full for evening service with people of different ages… The more likely reason is – just another culture, which I guess is far more ennobling for the common man than the atheistic and nihilistic Bulgarian.

The streets of Seville are full of life until late. In the central part, shopping is possible for up to incredible hours, after which you can relax in one of the many tapas bars. Delicious food, dizzying red wine, friendly attitude, smiling people… Is there anything to comment on this?

The Royal Palace (Alcazar) in Seville can be seen in half a day, but if you rush down the sloping plane to photograph all the things that make an impression, you will not have enough of the day. He is so beautiful! It is located opposite the Cathedral . Next to it is the Giralda Tower .

They are close to the old Jewish quarter – narrow and picturesque streets in the center of Seville, with small square courtyards with orange trees and small shops where you can find everything.

If you have a lot of time, you can visit a bunch of other sights such as the Golden Tower along the Guadalquivir River, the Andalusian Parliament building (former Spanish Renaissance hospital), the Trade Guild building, which houses the General Archives of the Spanish Empire. , ruled South America and the Philippines, the Macarena Basilica (Nuestra senora de la Esperanza Macarena), city walls, hospitals, gates (Puerta del Sol)?– There are some in every Spanish city… Everywhere you go, you will see an architectural landmark, because in Seville it’s just like that.

Day 6 Seville – Cordoba – Granada
In the morning we left the hotel in Seville and headed northeast. We liked the Andalusian capital so much that we didn’t believe another place would impress us after it, but it turned out not to be – fortunately, of course. We were about to see many more cities in Spain and we did not know that in each one we will find a different charm and a different atmosphere, still pleasant and memorable.

After Seville we first stopped in Cordoba . We looked at the impressive mosque-cathedral Mesquita de Córdoba for hours and photographed from different angles. Built in the 10th century during the Moorish rule, Mesquite was then the largest mosque in the world. Then it was turned into a Catholic cathedral and today it is the mix of styles and influences that leaves the traveler with his mouth open the first time he enters.

After the Mesquite, we wandered the narrow streets of the old Jewish quarter with white houses, orange trees, shops and restaurants. It is no coincidence that these landmarks of Cordoba are protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
In the evening we arrived in Granada and the next day we were to see another marvel of architectural art – the Alhambra.

Day 7 Granada – Madrid
We had bought tickets from the Internet with a specified time to visit, which you either strictly observe, or you are mercilessly sent to the entrance of the Alhambra . We waited in the long line of tourists in our time interval and went inside.

Both before and after this visit I watched many films about Alambra and I must say that nothing can compare with the real view of the palace, with feeling the atmosphere in it and experiencing it in real life. It can’t be described, so I won’t try. The Alhambra is a must-see, even if one is faced with the hypothetical choice of visiting only one place in Spain.

After Granada we continued to Madrid. This is one of the longest hikes in the tour of Portugal and Spain, but because of the convenient highways it did not weigh us down. We arrived in the evening and stayed in a wonderful hotel in the center of the Spanish capital, one of the most pleasant hotels during this trip, where we were generally very lucky with their choice.

We start with one of the most emblematic attractions of Dubai:
Burj Khalifa – the tallest building in the world at the moment with its 828 meters. For comparison, the Empire State Building is “some” 381 m high. ?Tourists climb to the middle floors (over 400 m) and the glass windows show the true face of Dubai – a city in the desert. The building is super modern, and the elevator takes us to the top in a minute, moving at unreal speed. It is much cheaper to buy the entrance ticket online than in any other way, and on the spot you risk waiting indefinitely, because the visit upstairs is reserved and of course, the convenient ones are booked in advance. The entrance for visitors to the Burj Khalifa is predictably in the Dubai Mall itself(Dubai Mall) to the delight of local traders. It is really huge – as it is explained everywhere, it is the largest mall in the world – and you can’t go around for a day if someone has such intentions. Inside is an Aquarium and an underwater zoo, and the braver ones can enter and swim with sharks in one of the pools. The emblem of the mall are the giant artificial waterfalls as part of the interior. Many other attractions lurk to impress the modern tourist, who, however, seems to find it increasingly difficult to marvel at such megalomaniac ideas.

Since the malls in Dubai are among the sights, we should not forget to mention the Mall of the Emirates (Mall of the Emirates) with its ski slope.
If we have to say something about the shopping in the listed malls, it is that Dubai is too far away if someone has decided to leave Bulgaria only for this sole purpose. Nor could it be said that the prices for world-class middle-class brands are much cheaper. In the more luxurious sector, things seem much more affordable than in Bulgaria, and the choice is incomparable, but it is still better to combine shopping with something else, as we will travel so many miles.

So let’s go back to the tour of other attractions and landmarks – as they are understood in Dubai:

Jumeirah Beach and especially the area around Dubai Marina is a place where you can see people walking, which is a rarity in Dubai. The most pleasant area – at least among those we saw during our trip. All the most famous hotel chains have a site in this area. Fortunately, we stayed right here. The hotel is immaculate, but there is a lot of construction going on around it, apparently with the idea of ​​turning the whole strip into a forest of skyscrapers in the shortest possible time.
The beach itself is white and fine sand, but because of the heat we realize this only in retrospect after returning to Bulgaria. While we are there, we only think about how to survive the heat, and the phrase “I’m going into the sea to cool off” loses its meaning in the unbearably warm waters of the Persian Gulf. Special signs on the beach recommend swimming parallel to the shore – once because of dangerous currents and the second time – because of… sharks ?Ah, how we miss our Karadere at the moment…

Palm Island is another peak in the achievements of urban architecture and construction in Dubai. Unfortunately, from the ground it cannot be seen and appreciated completely. It is well visible from the air, so one of the most common attractions is a helicopter ride. We are lucky to see the palm island from the plane on the way back to Bulgaria. Interesting and impressive view indeed. Hotel Atlantis The Palm, one of the most expensive in the emirate, rises deep into the sea as a crown of luxury. It has a separate entrance for tourists who come to see it, and one of the attractions offered is swimming with dolphins in shallow or deep waters…

Burj Al Arab – the famous super luxury hotel allows you to see it only if you book breakfast, lunch or dinner there in advance for a mandatory envelope. The most affordable option is a cocktail in the lobby or the skybar, and from the latter the view is truly unique and memorable. Gold, fountains, aquarium walls with fish – this is the lobby of the Burj al Arab. You can’t go in flip-flops from there while coming home from the beach…

What else can you do in Dubai?
Typical excursions that are offered to tourists – guests of Dubai and for which we have an opinion from our own experience, are:

Dhow cruise dinner – with pick-up and drop-off from / to the hotel. A pleasant walk in the Gulf of Dubai (Dubai Creek) with a traditional wooden boat with a chance to find yourself among the most colorful international environment. You will have the pleasure of having dinner on board with representatives of basically all races and religions.

For nothing in the world do not go to the historic village (Heritage Village) in the area of ​​Deira. Advertised as a “landmark that will reveal the historical charm of Dubai”, you risk being in a place from which there is no escape – nowhere to take a taxi, and the tourist bus passes at best in an hour, which is too dangerous in the heat . Guided by the naive motive to discover some authentic atmosphere from the emirate’s past, we find ourselves in a small fenced yard with ten souvenir shops and two other deluded Americans, caught like us on the bait of “historical charm”…
Alternative – Dubai Museum , which is located in the same area and which is actually part of the oldest building in Dubai – the fortress of Al-Fahidi.

The one-day trip to Abu Dhabi , the capital of the UAE, leaves fantastic memories . The third largest peninsula in the Arabian Peninsula after Mecca and Medina, the mosque is truly magnificent with its white domes, exquisite chandeliers and stained glass windows.

Female tourists should be warned that they will have to wear a black hooded robe despite the deadly temperatures in order to enter from another entrance, separate from the men. A walk along Abu Dhabi’s promenade (The Corniche) comes as a breath of fresh air after the crowds of tourists in the mosque. If you wish, you can sit down for lunch or choose to shop at the nearby Marina Mall. It is full of interesting and different shops, and somehow it is more cozy and quiet compared to the crowded Dubai malls.

Much greener and less glassy and metallic, Abu Dhabi looks more hospitable and natural to us, without being intrusive with claims of modernity and luxury. And the Sheikh Zayed Mosque even deserves the whole distance from Bulgaria.

With its “overdose” of artificial and modern attractions, Dubai is definitely not our dream destination. But falling right here, we have the chance to feel the power of human will to turn a city from the desert with almost no historical and architectural heritage into one of the most visited and popular tourist destinations in the world. And one has much to learn from this. Whether you love Dubai or not, of course, depends on your point of view. We will be happy if you share it with us!

Paris – the most romantic city in the world

Here are some of the more popular sights and routes in the city that you can focus on:
